On this day in 1914, a vessel successfully navigated  the locks of the Panama Canal for the first time.

TIP: Navigate your own waterways (bathtub or sink) with a game of sink of float. With your child, gather household objects and guess which will sink or float. Ask your child how he or she decides what will sink or float.

Next, practice data gathering and analysis skills by creating tally marks for each of the two categories. Take this further by creating a bar or line graph together. Remind your learner to title his or her graph and label the x and y axis.

After graphing try fractions. What fraction of the items sunk?

For little learners work on counting and sorting. Within each category, sort by color, shape and/or size.

Whatever the follow-up activity to sink or float, do it together and fun will surely float to the top!
